The Reality Thought Experiment

By Frank Waszut

I know there are many people in today's society that are either theist, atheist, anti-theist, or agnostic. Me personally I am agnostic, meaning I don't know, because however our reality came into being it is at a realm of understanding that we have yet comprehend much less manipulate. I have been working on my science fiction novels and have come up with an idea to possibly rectify all of these theories of our origins that may satiate our theories of mind and reality. This idea is a thought experiment and it is as follows:

I imagine if you will that you are a computer programmer. For the sake of the experiment let’s assume you were educated in the intricacies of programming computer operating systems and were tasked with running an experimental program called "Reality". Within this program you would also have to write in lines of code called "singularities" which would give birth to code called "universes". The lines of code for these singularities would be coded in random and varying lines of code so that no two singularities were a like. They could be immensely numerous and even infinite. You would allow the program to run the experiment without interference in order for your results to not be skewed. After a while some of those singularity born universes would begin to form galaxies, stars, planets, black holes, etc. Eventually some of these universes would give rise to life and inevitably "intelligent" forms of life would come about that could form theories of mind as well as the realization of their individual spans of existence being finite instead infinite which is deeply traumatizing upon first realization and makes one search for a loophole in this "law".

As a result ideologies come about they center around the creation of their individual universe. Some would say it was by intelligent design and some by chance while the programmer of this reality knows full well that it is both. Bear in mind the programmer can't in any shape of form inform those "intelligent" beings of the truth of their reality. He just has to allow the experiment to run and take notes. As more and more of these beings came into this reality their would be more and more individualized theories coming about while some became more widely accepted than others but none could have anyway of truly knowing because the programmer who technically made them can't interfere for the sake of not compromising the experiment so all are just left to think, ponder, and theorize which allows then evolve, adapt, and survive to their ever changing reality that they are in for a length that is not determined.

Now all inside this experiment called reality would inevitably come up with a theory to explain something that seems to have come out of nothing. Some would someone created their experience and would conclude that this being is omnipotent while others would feel there is no being at all, while others would disagree on the identity of the being which would cause much conflict. Now the being that made this program wouldn’t be omnipotent in its own reality but to those that don’t even know it exists would theorize that it is. Many would suffer and wonder why this being doesn't intervene despite their pleas for help. The being just has to sit back and collect data. So here are the questions to which to which the answers would only be theories until an this experiment could be run in a physical, empirical method:

1.      Would this being live in a reality similar to its own and why?

2.      Could this being be part of a similar program?

3.      What would be the purpose of these programs?

4.      What would the meaning of them be? s of our origins that may satiate our theories of mind and reality. This idea is a thought experiment and it is as follows:

I imagine if you will that you were a computer programmer. All the code for these singularities would be coded random and varying stings of code so that no two singularities were a like. You would allow the program to run the experiment without interference in order for your results to not be skewed. After awhile some of these singularity born universes would begin to form galaxies, stars, planets, black holes, etc. Eventually some of these universes would give rise to life and inevitably "intelligent" forms of life would come about that could form theories of mind as well as the realization of their individual spans of existence being finite instead infinite which is deeply traumatizing upon first realization and makes one search for a loophole in this "law".

So here is the question: Those in the program as a God but would the programmer ask the same question about its own reality?

5.      Can this programing be circumvented?

  1. Sounds like the Matrix, but less sinister.
